1. About the Campaign
This campaign supports the Sendalankara Jeer Trust in preserving the centuries-old tradition of offering ceremonial umbrellas during the Tirumala Brahmotsavam. The initiative promotes awareness of the tradition’s spiritual meaning and ensures its continuation under the guidance of Mannargudi Sri Chendalankara Sampath Kumara Jeeyar.
2. The Problem and the Solution
Many sacred customs associated with temples and festivals are gradually losing visibility as knowledge of their history, symbolism, and traditional practices declines. Without organised support, the communities and devotees responsible for maintaining these traditions may struggle to continue them in their authentic form.
The Sendalankara Jeer Trust helps preserve the Tirumala umbrella tradition by organising and supporting the sacred yatra. Devotees carry the ceremonial umbrellas on foot from the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple in Chennai to Tirumala over approximately ten days.
Campaign funds will help support:
- Traditional preparation of the ceremonial umbrellas
- Travel, food, and accommodation for participating devotees
- Transportation and logistical arrangements
- Rituals and spiritual programmes connected with the yatra
- Documentation and public awareness about the tradition
- Activities promoting Dharma and an informed understanding of rituals
- 3. Expected Impact and Beneficiaries
The campaign will help preserve an important living tradition associated with the Tirumala Brahmotsavam and pass its spiritual and cultural significance to future generations.
The beneficiaries will include participating devotees, traditional artisans, volunteers, pilgrims, temple communities, young people, and members of the public seeking a deeper understanding of Sanatana Dharma and its living traditions.
